History

How it all started

Sea Dragons Gavel Club was founded in late 2025 by a group of high school students at BASIS International School Park Lane Harbour, led by founder Bruce Yu, who was a sophomore at the time. Everything started from a simple yet thought-provoking question after participating in a Toastmasters Club meeting: “How can I let my schoolmates experience what I just did?” Drawing from his experiences with Toastmasters, he introduced the Gavel Club method of learning and led the club alongside other student leaders. The club’s goal was to provide a differentiated education in communication and leadership, tailored to students’ needs, while fostering a collaborative community built on warmth and inclusiveness.

The first meeting of Sea Dragons Gavel Club took place in a residential area near the school, with five charter members. The club quickly expanded, collaborating with other Gavel Clubs in China and worldwide, including those in the United States and Canada. The clubs together organized a variety of online educational sessions and speech contests, and provided mutual support to benefit members across borders. Additionally, the club partnered with local TEDx, local Rotary Clubs, Erika’s Lighthouse, and more to offer service-learning, mental health, and other educational opportunities. Today, Sea Dragons Gavel Club stands as one of the most mature and experienced student-led education and community service hubs for students in China.

Yale University

Campus Tour at Yale University

Bruce Yu visited Yale University during the summer of 2025. Observing the confidence of Yale students, he was prompted to ask: Why do many Chinese students struggle to confidently express themselves in English despite early exposure? And, why do they lack a strong sense of community and inclusiveness? Bruce Yu concluded that the answers lie in the limited access to differentiated education suited to their needs and a lack of opportunities to experience the warmth and purpose of a supportive community.
